Here's what I've

done so far...

For the past eight years I have been consulting with school systems about the problem of bullying in a wide array of presentations in my home state of Ohio and in other states. I have worked with staffs at the elementary, middle school and high school levels in public and private systems to make them more aware of how bullying is defined and what to look for. I have presented to students from kindergarten to high school about what bullying is and when teasing behaviors cross the line, about how boys and girls bully differently, and things to do when they see someone bullied. I have also worked with college students who are doing their student teaching and to parents with children in grades k-12.

I have also presented at Conferences of the National Council of Teachers of English (NCTE) several times, the Assembly on Literature for Adolescents of NCTE (ALAN), Ohio Council of Teachers of English and Language Arts (OCTELA), Western Reserve Ohio Teachers of English (WROTE), Ohio Educational Library Media Association (OELMA), and the Global Issues Resource Center (GIRC) of Cleveland Community College.

Some of the workshops I have presented are listed here:

  • Bullying - The Latest Research
  • How Boys and Girls Bully Differently
  • Girl Cliques
  • Name-Calling, Labeling, and Hate Slurs
  • How to Create a More Respectful Environment
  • Using Children's and Young Adult Books to Discuss the Social Problem of Bullying
  • Helping Parents Stay Aware of the Problem of Bullying
  • Motivating School Staffs to Get Involved
  • Building on Respect: Creating a Whole School Bully Prevention Program
  • What is Cyberbulling?

I have also worked with school systems to develop the programs they need, and I can do the same for you.

Fees are available on request.

-Dr. Teri S. Lesesne, Professor, Sam Houston State University, Huntsville, Texas. Author of MAKING THE MATCH: THE RIGHT BOOK FOR THE RIGHT READER AT THE RIGHT TIME (Stenhouse) and the forthcoming: NAKED READING.

Within minutes of meeting my students, CJ had them telling her things about our school culture they would have never shared with me. My kids appreciated her frankness, and were completely impressed by her knowledge of the (YA) novels they had been reading, and her honest affirmation of the insights they had about bullying. When she left, we had a lot to talk about for a solid week.

--Jeffrey Harr, English Teacher, Theodore Roosevelt High School, Kent, Ohio

CJ has demonstrated time and time again that she is an exceptional communicator and gifted teacher. Teens respond positively to CJ's work. Her honest, open approach with kids builds admiration and respect with her audience. She is able to professionally deal with teens' use of insensitive language and actions in ways that will make a life-long impact in their relationships with others. Her appreciation for diversity and her understanding of adolescents provide a strong foundation for her ability to make a difference in the lives of students and staff members in our schools.
